The Hijri or Islamic Calendar is a date system based on the cycles of the moon (qamariyyah). It begins with the migration (Hijrah) of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE, which marks the starting point of the Islamic year count.
The Hijri calendar contains 12 months: Muharram, Safar, Rabi' al-Awwal, Rabi' al-Thani, Jumada al-Awwal, Jumada al-Thani, Rajab, Sha'ban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhu al-Qi'dah and Dhu al-Hijjah. Each month has 29 or 30 days depending on the sighting of the new moon (rukyah) or calculation (hisab).
This calendar is used by Muslims to determine the timing of worship practices such as fasting during Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha and the Hajj pilgrimage.
